Some people go through life content to eat their fill
Some people yearn to live in that mansion on the hill
Some people look for thrills just to keep from being bored
But me, I want to live in the House of the Lord.

Ashrei yoshvei veite-cha,
Od yehaleluka, Selah!(1)
Ashrei HaAm she kacha lo,
Ashrei HaAm sh'HaShem Elokav(2).

Well I used to like to ramble, I used to like to rove
Then one day I met Avraham, Yitzchak and Yakov.
Well they say there's nothing stronger than the three-ply cord(3)
So I went looking for the place they call the House of the Lord.

Ashrei yoshvei veite-cha,
Od yehaleluka, Selah!
Ashrei HaAm she kacha lo,
Ashrei HaAm sh'HaShem Elokav.

Now my friend Dan
He had a plan
A plan to bring him fortune and fame
And in the end he had it all
But he held it all in disdain
Now every day that comes Dan’s way
Brings its own reward
Because Dan found his place in the space they call the House of Lord.

You might be living in a shack or in a penthouse suite
You might be healing the sick, you might be sweeping the street
It doesn’t matter who you are but where you’re moving toward
And the gate's always open to the House of the Lord.

Ashrei yoshvei veite-cha,
Od yehaleluka, Selah!
Ashrei HaAm she kacha lo,
Ashrei HaAm sh'HaShem Elokav!

(1) Tehillim (Psalms) 84:5

"Forward forever stride those that dwell in Thy house, continually they proclaim Thy praise."  - translation from The Hirsch Psalms

(2) Tehillim (Psalms) 144:15

"Forward strides that nation with whom it is so.  Forward strides that nation whose God is the Lord." - translation from The Hirsch Psalms

(3) The three Patriarchs: "Abraham personified chesed (kindness) and Isaac epitomized din (uncompromising justice).  Individually, these principles could not sustain the world.  Even a world built on both kindness and justice could not long endure, since these two opposites would clash with each other constantly.  Only if the concept of emes (truth) as personified by Jacob, could the world find its necessary balance.  Truth decides when to utilize kindess, when to utilize justice, and when to temper it with the other.  When kindness and justice are blended in the proper measure, the result is truth - this tripartite combination gives beauty, meaning and permanence to each of its components.  Thus, the patriarchs complemented each other's distinct characteristics to establish the oneness on which Israel's foundation is built." - The Wisdom in the Hebrew Alphabet, Michael L. Munk
